Petrified wood, or petrified tree, is the name given to a special type of fossilized wood. It comes from Ancient Greek πέτρα ("rock") and -ειδος , - ("in the shape of"), literally "wood turned into stone" or, more dramatically, "wood become stone".

The amazing colors and textures that fossilized wood takes on are all thanks to the minerals found in the soil. Over time, minerals such as manganese, iron and copper penetrate the wood from surrounding water and earth, causing it to fade from its original color into something spectacular. The end result is fossil wood - a colorful collection of minerals that take on the exact form of the original tree or trunk.
