Rainbow Obsidian Freeform – Mexico (Approx. 9 in)

This rainbow obsidian freeform was mined in Magdalena, Mexico and hand-carved by the miner himself. It is not a factory piece. The person who pulled this stone from the earth is the same person who shaped it, and that connection between raw material and finished form is something you almost never find in the mineral world.

At 1.1 kilograms and approximately 8 by 4 inches, this is a substantial freeform with deep, fluid layers of iridescent banding. When light moves across the surface, bands of violet, green, gold, and electric blue shift and ripple through the obsidian's glassy black matrix. The carving follows the natural flow of the stone's internal structure, allowing the rainbow sheen to express itself across broad, uninterrupted curves.

Rainbow obsidian is a volcanic glass formed during rapid lava cooling. The iridescent layers are caused by nanoparticles of magnetite aligned in thin films within the glass, each layer refracting light at a slightly different wavelength. Magdalena, Mexico is one of the most important sources for high-quality rainbow obsidian, producing material with exceptional color range and clarity of banding.
