Malachite — Banded Copper Carbonate
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral recognized by its distinctive banded pattern of light and dark green. Formed in copper deposits through the weathering of copper ore, malachite's swirling bands are created by variations in copper concentration during growth. Major sources include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Australia, and Arizona.
Is malachite safe to handle?
Polished malachite is safe to handle and display. Raw malachite dust should not be inhaled (as with any mineral dust). We recommend polished specimens for home display, which showcase the banding pattern beautifully while being completely safe.
What makes malachite green?
Malachite's vivid green comes entirely from copper. The varying concentrations of copper carbonate create the characteristic banded pattern — darker bands have higher copper content. No two malachite specimens have identical banding.
