Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz with the chemical formula SiO₂. It belongs to the trigonal crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, making it one of the more durable decorative stones. True onyx features parallel bands of alternating color — most commonly black and white — though the term is widely used in the gem trade to refer to solid black chalcedony that has been uniformly dyed or heat-treated. Significant sources include Brazil, India, Uruguay, and Madagascar.
Onyx has been carved and polished since antiquity. The Romans used it extensively for intaglio seals and cameos, taking advantage of its distinct banding to create relief carvings with contrasting layers. In the Islamic tradition, onyx was set into rings and prayer beads. The name itself derives from the Greek word for "claw" or "fingernail," referencing the stone's translucent, banded appearance. Collectors today appreciate onyx for its deep, saturated black color and its excellent ability to take a high polish — it is a staple material for carved bowls, bookends, and display pieces.
