Shungite is a carbon-rich mineraloid found almost exclusively in the Zazhoginsky deposit near Lake Onega in Karelia, Russia. Unlike most carbon minerals, shungite contains fullerenes — hollow, cage-like carbon molecules that were not synthesized in a laboratory until 1985, yet have existed in this ancient rock for nearly two billion years. Shungite ranges from 30% to 98% carbon by weight and registers 3.5–4 on the Mohs hardness scale. Its color is a deep, lustrous black with a semi-metallic sheen.
Historically, shungite has been used in Russia for centuries as a water purification material, and Peter the Great reportedly established a spa at Martial Waters in Karelia that utilized shungite filtration. Among mineral collectors, shungite is prized for its geological rarity — there is no other known deposit of this age and composition anywhere on Earth. The distinction between "regular" shungite (lower carbon) and "elite" or "noble" shungite (high carbon, with a brilliant, silvery fracture surface) is an important grading consideration for serious collectors.
Our shungite collection features:
- Polished spheres, pyramids, and cubes
- Raw elite shungite specimens
- Tumbled stones and palm stones
- Bracelets and wearable pieces
