Tiger's Eye: Chatoyant Quartz with a Silky Flash
Tiger's eye is a chatoyant gemstone formed when crocidolite (blue asbestos) fibers are gradually replaced by silica, preserving the original fibrous structure. This pseudomorphic process creates the signature luminous band that rolls across the stone's surface when tilted, an optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy. Most commercial tiger's eye is sourced from the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, though deposits also exist in Western Australia and parts of India.
What causes the shimmer in tiger's eye?
The silky, shifting light effect comes from parallel arrays of fine quartz fibers that replaced the original crocidolite. When light enters the polished surface, it reflects off thousands of aligned fibers simultaneously, producing a bright band that appears to move. This same phenomenon occurs in cat's eye chrysoberyl and some obsidian specimens with sheen.
How should I display tiger's eye at home?
Place polished tiger's eye where directional light can activate its chatoyancy, such as near a window or under a focused lamp. It pairs beautifully with other warm-toned minerals like pyrite and citrine for a collected, layered display on shelves or consoles.
Tiger's Eye Crystals
Tiger's eye is a chatoyant gemstone known for its silky, golden-brown bands that shimmer with light. This optical effect, called chatoyancy, comes from parallel fibers of crocidolite replaced by silica. It is one of the most recognizable and sought-after stones in crystal collecting.
Our tiger's eye collection includes polished palm stones, raw specimens, carved shapes, and statement jewelry. Tiger's eye rates 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, making it excellent for rings, bracelets, and everyday pieces. Primary sources include South Africa, Australia, and India.
Tiger's eye is traditionally associated with courage, confidence, and clear thinking. Pair with carnelian for motivation or black obsidian for grounding.
