Tremolite is a calcium-magnesium amphibole that forms when dolomitic limestone is metamorphosed. Nearly all of it is massive or fibrous. Well-formed prismatic crystals with clean faces are uncommon, and large ones come from a short list of localities.
The Afghanistan–Pakistan border ranges of Badakhshan, Kunar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa produce the finest of them. The color runs from white and silver-gray to green where chromium enters the structure, and the blades carry a silky luster along their length.
