A museum-grade almandine garnet in graphite matrix from the Red Embers Mine in Erving, Massachusetts — one of the most celebrated garnet localities in the United States. This 1.94 lb specimen displays dozens of deep ruby-red almandine garnet crystals embedded in lustrous dark graphite, each one catching light like a blood-red gemstone set in black velvet.
The Red Embers Mine produces some of the finest garnet-in-graphite specimens in North America. This is an exceptional example — the size, garnet density, and crystal quality place it firmly in museum-grade territory. A piece this significant from Red Embers is increasingly rare as the deposit yields fewer large specimens. This is the largest piece in our collection.

About Red Embers Mine Garnets
Almandine garnet (Fe₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) forms under extreme high-pressure metamorphic conditions deep within the earth's crust. At the Red Embers Mine in Franklin County, Massachusetts, these garnets crystallized within graphite schist during the Acadian orogeny — a mountain-building event approximately 400 million years ago. The contrast between the deep red, gem-quality almandine crystals and the metallic graphite matrix makes these specimens among the most visually striking in American mineralogy. Each garnet is a natural dodecahedron — the characteristic 12-faced crystal form that has fascinated mineralogists for centuries.
