Ocean Jasper is known exclusively from a single deposit along the Madagascar coast, now largely worked out, making original-vein material increasingly scarce. The best specimens, such as this one, are recognized by their tightly defined spherical patterns and strong color contrast, a geological signature highly sought after by collectors.

About the stone
Jasper is opaque chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz so loaded with iron oxide that light can't pass through it. That iron is what paints red jasper its brick red. It takes an exceptional polish, which is why it's been carved into seals and beads since ancient Egypt.
