How to Tell if Amethyst Is Real: 6 Tests That Actually Work

Amethyst is one of the most faked crystals on the market — not because it's expensive, but because it's popular. The good news: it's also one of the easiest to verify once you know what natural quartz does and doesn't do. Here are the tests we actually use, in order of usefulness.

1. Look for Color Zoning

Natural amethyst is almost never uniformly purple. Iron and natural irradiation color the quartz unevenly, so real crystals show angular zones — darker at the tips, paler toward the base, sometimes with clear or white patches. A large cluster with perfectly even, saturated purple throughout every point is a red flag for dyed quartz or glass.

2. Check for Bubbles

Quartz never contains round gas bubbles — glass does. Examine the stone under strong light with a loupe or your phone's macro lens. Perfectly spherical bubbles inside mean you're holding glass, full stop. (Natural amethyst can contain mineral inclusions and feathery veils, which look wispy and irregular, not round.)

3. The Hardness Test

Amethyst is quartz: Mohs 7. It will scratch ordinary glass and a steel knife blade won't scratch it. Test on an inconspicuous spot of a tumbled stone — never on a specimen's termination. Most glass fakes fail here immediately.

4. Temperature and Weight

Crystalline quartz conducts heat away from your skin faster than glass or resin, so real amethyst feels distinctly cool when you pick it up and stays cool longer. Resin fakes also feel suspiciously light for their size.

5. The Synthetic Question

Here's the honest part most sellers skip: lab-grown (hydrothermal) amethyst exists, it is chemically identical to natural amethyst, and it is genuinely difficult to distinguish without gemological equipment. It shows up mostly in faceted stones and beads, rarely in clusters — growing a convincing fake cluster isn't economical. This is why clusters and geodes are the safest amethyst formats to buy, and why seller transparency matters more than any home test.

6. Price and Provenance Sanity Check

Amethyst is abundant — that's exactly why faking it only pays at scale with cheap materials. A seller who names the locality (Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia), photographs each piece individually, and prices honestly has no incentive to fake an affordable stone.
