Smoky quartz is quartz turned brown to near-black by natural radiation acting on trace aluminum in the lattice, over geological time. The best pieces hold an even, transparent smoke rather than opaque black, with sharp terminations. Large clean crystals are rare; heat-treated dark quartz is common, so provenance matters.
