Amethyst is quartz colored purple by trace iron and natural irradiation over millions of years, grown in volcanic gas cavities that became geodes. What separates a good piece is saturation: deep violet with red flashes, even color to the tips, and crystal faces that stay glossy. Pale, patchy material is common; saturated, well-formed material is not.
Artigas, Uruguay produces the deepest color in the world; Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil produces the largest cathedrals.

About the stone
Amethyst's purple comes from trace iron irradiated naturally inside the quartz over geologic time. Heat it past roughly 400°C and the purple turns golden — most commercial citrine started life as amethyst.
