Blue Lace Agate

Blue lace agate is a banded variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO2) prized for its soft powder-blue color and delicate white lace-like banding. Each band represents a separate silica deposition event, creating concentric patterns that look like layers of sky and cloud frozen in stone. Mohs hardness 6.5-7.

The finest material comes from a single famous deposit at Ysterputs in southern Namibia, making well-banded pieces increasingly hard to source. The Namibian material is renowned for its soft, even blue color and fine, regular banding. Blue lace agate also occurs in parts of Brazil and South Africa, though Namibian specimens are considered the standard for quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is blue lace agate?

Blue lace agate is a banded chalcedony with soft powder-blue and white lace-like banding. Each band represents a separate silica deposition event over millions of years. Mohs hardness 6.5-7.

Where does blue lace agate come from?

The finest material comes from the Ysterputs deposit in southern Namibia. This single locality produces the most prized specimens, making well-banded pieces increasingly scarce. Brazil and South Africa also produce blue lace agate.

Is blue lace agate rare?

High-quality blue lace agate with fine, even banding is becoming increasingly difficult to source as the primary Namibian deposit is worked. Lower-grade material is more available, but gem-quality specimens with strong color and regular banding are genuinely scarce.
