Green Opal is a hydrated silica mineraloid with the formula SiO₂·nH₂O. Like all common opals, it is amorphous — meaning it lacks a repeating crystal structure — and does not display the play-of-color seen in precious opal. Instead, green opal is valued for its opaque-to-translucent body in shades of pistachio, mint, and apple green. It registers 5.5–6 on the Mohs hardness scale. The most commercially available green opal comes from Madagascar, though deposits also exist in Peru, Tanzania, and Australia.
Green opal's color is typically caused by inclusions of nickel-bearing minerals such as chrysoprase-like silicates, or by trace amounts of iron and copper within the silica matrix. Madagascan green opal became widely available in the mineral market in the early 2000s and quickly gained popularity for its fresh, vivid green color and affordability. Collectors appreciate green opal for its smooth, waxy polish and its ability to display a range of green tones and translucency within a single specimen. It is sometimes marketed under trade names like "pistachio opal" or "Madagascan jade," though it is not related to true jade.

Love that different aspects of it are highlighted in different lighting - in a bright setting you see a million tiny quartz on top that you would never know were there in the lower lighting setting.
