A substantial Uruguayan amethyst geode weighing 4.77 kilograms (10.5 lbs) and measuring approximately 12 x 5 x 5 inches. The geode features double cavities lined with deeply saturated purple amethyst crystals, framed by a polished agate border that reveals concentric banding in warm earth tones. The contrast between the raw crystalline interior and the smooth agate rim is striking from every angle.
Uruguay produces some of the world's most intensely colored amethyst. The deep purple saturation in Uruguayan specimens comes from higher concentrations of iron impurities combined with natural gamma radiation from surrounding basalt flows. The polished agate border — formed from chalcedony deposited before the amethyst crystallized — serves as both a natural frame and a geological record of the geode's formation sequence.
About the stone
Amethyst's purple comes from trace iron irradiated naturally inside the quartz over geologic time. Heat it past roughly 400°C and the purple turns golden — most commercial citrine started life as amethyst.
