Iridescent chalcopyrite crystals on a druzy quartz matrix from the Casteel No. 35 Mine in the Viburnum Trend, Iron County, Missouri. 0.515 lbs. The rainbow iridescence — blues, purples, and golds — is entirely natural, created by light diffracting off thin oxide films on the chalcopyrite crystal faces. Unlike typical Viburnum Trend specimens on dolomite, this piece features chalcopyrite directly on sparkling druzy quartz — a rarer and more visually striking association.

About Casteel Mine Chalcopyrite
The Casteel Mine (Viburnum No. 35) in Iron County, Missouri is part of the Viburnum Trend — one of the world's most important lead-zinc mining districts. While primarily mined for galena and sphalerite, the Casteel produces exceptional specimen-quality chalcopyrite, quartz, dolomite, and calcite as byproducts. Chalcopyrite on druzy quartz from this locality is particularly sought after by collectors because the sparkling quartz matrix amplifies the rainbow iridescence of the chalcopyrite.
