Fluorite — The Most Colorful Mineral
Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2) occurs in virtually every color of the spectrum. Its perfect octahedral cleavage and wide color range — from deep purple and emerald green to golden yellow and clear — make it one of the most sought-after collector minerals. The best specimens come from China, Mexico, England, and the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district.
Why does fluorite come in so many colors?
Fluorite's color comes from trace impurities and radiation-induced color centers within the crystal lattice. Different conditions during formation produce different colors, often within the same crystal — creating the banded, rainbow specimens that collectors prize.
Is fluorite fragile?
Fluorite has a Mohs hardness of 4 and perfect octahedral cleavage, making it softer and more delicate than quartz. Display fluorite away from high-traffic areas and handle with care. It's a display mineral, not a wear-daily stone.
