Peridot is the gem-quality variety of olivine, a magnesium iron silicate ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄) that forms deep in the Earth's upper mantle and reaches the surface through volcanic activity. It is one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one color — green — although the shade ranges from yellow-green to olive to deep bottle green depending on iron content. Peridot rates 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.

Peridot is genuinely ancient. It has been mined for over 3,500 years — the Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun" and sourced it from the volcanic island of Zabargad (St. John's Island) in the Red Sea, which was the world's primary source for millennia. Today, the finest peridot comes from Pakistan (Suppat region, Kashmir), where high-altitude deposits produce exceptionally vivid green crystals. Arizona's San Carlos Reservation produces abundant gem-quality peridot. Myanmar (Mogok) yields prized deep green material. Rarely, peridot arrives in pallasite meteorites — making it one of the only gemstones found in outer space.
