The culture of Edo (the old name of Tokyo 1600-1800) was a playful and stylish one, born out of a marriage of the elegant and the common, the coarse and the refined. People enjoyed the four seasons, treasured their friends and neighbors, and lived lives brimming with vitality. This series was created by master incense artisans in Tokyo to express the fragrant atmosphere of old Edo. A single thin column of smoke beckons you to the stylish, modernist world that Edo represents. We invite you to bask in the fragrant world of Edo.

Nippon Kodo's products have unique fragrances. These fragrances come from tying together closely guarded preparation skills that are more than 400 years old with the sensitivities of modern perfumers. Nippon Kodo inherited their skills through writings on the mixture of aromatic woods by Takai Juemon, an incense preparer who supplied the Emperor of Japan in the Tensho era (late 16th century). Perfumers with Japan's best noses and instincts interpret and evolve that tradition to create exquisite fragrances.

Nippon Kodo carefully selects the natural aromatic materials that go into their incenses, gathering high-quality materials from around the world, while also engaging in forestation and other forms of conservation in Southeast Asia to protect the environment from which their materials come from. While carrying on the wisdom and traditions of their forebears, Nippon Kodo crafts their products everyday with a want to enrich people’s lives and minds, while also promoting the traditional cultural activity of incense burning to convey Japan’s beautiful traditions.
