What Is Human Design?
Human Design is a system of self-knowledge that combines four ancient wisdom traditions — astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, and the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system — with quantum physics and genetics. The result is a highly specific, deeply personal map of your energy, decision-making style, life purpose, and the way you're designed to interact with the world.
At the center of Human Design is your bodygraph — a visual chart calculated from your exact birth date, time, and location. Unlike a standard birth chart or a personality quiz, your bodygraph shows which of nine energy centers are defined (consistently active) in you, which are undefined (open to external influence), and how energy flows through your entire system.
Every person's bodygraph is unique. And once you understand yours, patterns that may have felt confusing or broken in your life — chronic exhaustion, wrong decisions, relationships that drain you — often begin to make immediate, clarifying sense.
Where Did Human Design Come From?
Human Design was transmitted to Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower) in 1987 during an eight-day mystical experience on the island of Ibiza. Whether you take that origin story literally or metaphorically, what emerged was a remarkably coherent system that has since been validated by tens of thousands of practitioners and students worldwide.
Ra spent the last two decades of his life developing and teaching the system. After his death in 2011, Human Design has continued to spread rapidly — particularly in the last five years, as more people find their way to the bodygraph through social media, podcasts, and deep personal seeking.
What makes Human Design distinct is that it doesn't ask you to believe anything. It invites you to experiment with your own design and observe the results. The system calls this "living your design" — and the experiment typically produces results people describe as nothing short of transformative.
Your Human Design Chart: What You're Looking At
When you pull up your Human Design bodygraph, you'll see:
Nine centers connected by channels, each corresponding to different functions of your being. These centers can be defined (colored in) or undefined (white). Defined centers work consistently and reliably. Undefined centers are receptive — they take in and amplify energy from the world around you.
64 gates (derived from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching) positioned around the bodygraph. The gates activated in your chart come from the positions of planets at the moment of your birth and 88 days before it — your "design" calculation.
Channels (connecting two activated gates) create defined centers and determine your energy flow through the body.
Your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile — the four core elements that form the foundation of how you're designed to operate in the world.
Most people start with Type and work their way deeper from there.
The 5 Human Design Types
Your Type is the single most important piece of your Human Design. It determines your fundamental energy mechanics — how you're designed to engage with the world, make an impact, and sustain yourself without burning out.
There are five types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector. Each has a Strategy (the correct way to move through life) and a Signature (the feeling that arises when you're living in alignment).
Generator — 37% of the world
Generators are the life force of the planet. They have a defined Sacral center — a powerful, sustainable source of creative and work energy. When a Generator is doing work they love, they can go all day. When they're not, they feel profoundly drained and frustrated.
Strategy: Respond. Generators are not designed to initiate. They're designed to wait for life t
o bring things to them, then check in with their gut — their Sacral response — to feel what's a "yes" and what's a "no."
Signature in alignment: Satisfaction. Not-self theme: Frustration.
The biggest shift for Generators is learning to stop forcing and initiating, and instead trusting the gut-level response that is always, always available.
Manifesting Generator — 33% of the world
Manifesting Generators are a hybrid type — Generator energy with a direct motor connection to the Throat center. They're fast, multi-passionate, and often several steps ahead of everyone else. They're designed to find the most efficient path through anything, and they're designed to pivot.
Strategy: Respond first, then inform. Like Generators, they respond to life. But because they move fast and can affect others, they're also designed to inform the people around them before taking action.
Signature in alignment: Satisfaction and peace. Not-self theme: Frustration and anger.
Projector — 20% of the world
Projectors are the guides and visionaries. They don't have consistent access to the Sacral energy of Generators — and many Projectors have spent years burning themselves out trying to keep up with Generator-world expectations.
Projectors are designed to see and understand systems, people, and organizations in ways others simply cannot. But their gifts are only accessible when they're invited.
Strategy: Wait for the invitation. A genuine recognition and invitation — especially for major life moves like love, career, and place — allows Projectors to step into their mastery without resistance.
Signature in alignment: Success. Not-self theme: Bitterness.
Manifestor — 9% of the world
Manifestors are the only type actually designed to initiate. They have a direct connection between a motor center and the Throat — meaning they have the energy to act on impulse and create immediate impact. Historically the leaders and rulers, today many Manifestors feel a deep resistance to being controlled or managed.
Strategy: Inform. Before taking major actions, Manifestors are designed to inform the people their actions will impact. This isn't asking permission — it's releasing the resistance that builds when others are surprised by their moves.
Signature in alignment: Peace. Not-self theme: Anger.
Reflector — 1% of the world
Reflectors are the rarest and most extraordinary type. They have no defined centers — they're completely open, taking in and amplifying the energy of every person and environment around them. They are, quite literally, a mirror for the world.
Strategy: Wait a lunar cycle (28 days) before making major decisions. Reflectors need time to sample multiple perspectives and energies before clarity arrives.
Signature in alignment: Surprise and delight. Not-self theme: Disappointment.
Reflectors thrive in environments that are beautiful, clear, and energetically healthy. More than any other type, the spaces and objects they surround themselves with profoundly affect their entire experience of life.
The 9 Centers: Your Energetic Architecture
Each of the nine centers in the Human Design bodygraph corresponds to a specific domain of human experience:
H ead — inspiration, mental pressure, and questions. Ajna — conceptualization, analysis, and certainty. Throat — manifestation, communication, and action in the world. G Center / Identity — love, direction, and life purpose. Heart / Will — willpower, ego, and the material realm. Sacral — life force energy, creativity, and sustainable work. Solar Plexus / Emotional — feelings, passion, desire, and emotional intelligence. Spleen — intuition, survival, health, and in-the-moment awareness. Root — adrenaline, pressure, the drive to complete and release.
Defined centers operate consistently — they're stable, reliable, and characteristic of who you are. Undefined centers are your areas of openness: where you're most sensitive to others, most susceptible to conditioning, and paradoxically where your greatest wisdom can emerge once you stop over-identifying with what's passing through you.
Human Design Authority: How You're Designed to Decide
Your Authority tells you how to make correct decisions for your specific design. This is where Human Design becomes remarkably practical — and where most people experience the most immediate change.
Emotional / Solar Plexus Authority — wait through the emotional wave; clarity emerges over time, never in the heat of the moment. This is the most common authority, belonging to roughly 50% of people.
Sacral Authority — trust the immediate gut "uh-huh" or "uh-uh" response. For Generators and MGs without emotional definition.
Splenic Authority — a quiet, in-the-moment intuitive hit that speaks once and doesn't repeat itself. Learn to catch it.
Ego / Heart Authority — decisions made from what you genuinely desire and can authentically commit to.
Self-Projected Authority — clarity comes from hearing yourself speak out loud to a trusted other.
Mental / Environmental Authority — for certain Projectors, clarity emerges through trusted environments and relationships, not inner sensation.
Lunar Authority — for Reflectors only: wait the full 28-day lunar cycle before deciding anything major.

Human Design Profile: Your Life's Role
Your Profile is a two-number combination derived from the I Ching lines — 1/3, 2/4, 5/1, 6/2, and so on. It describes the archetypal role you're here to play: the costume you wear on your life path.
A 1/3, for example, is here to build a solid foundation through deep research and learn through embodied trial and error. A 5/1 is here to be seen as a practical guide — someone others project solutions onto. A 6/2 is a role model in the making, spending the first part of life in experimental living before stepping into quiet example.
