How to Cleanse & Charge Crystals: The Complete Safety Guide
By Crystals.com | Crystal Care | 12 min read
Cleansing and charging crystals is the single most asked-about topic in crystal care — and also the most misunderstood. The internet is full of one-size-fits-all advice that, if followed literally, will destroy certain stones within minutes. Water-soluble minerals dissolve. Heat-sensitive gems crack. Iron-bearing stones rust.
This guide is built the same kind museums perform. This is not mystical. It is housekeeping for rocks.
The problem is that some cleaning methods can damage certain stones. Selenite (Selenite Cleansing Wand) dissolves in water. Malachite releases toxic copper compounds when wet. Amethyst (Amethyst Geode) fades in direct sunlight. Knowing which method is safe for which crystal is the foundation of good crystal care.

Why Cleanse & Charge Crystals?
Crystals interact with their environment. They absorb oils from your skin, collect dust, and may pick up residue from packaging, shipping, or previous handling. Physical cleansing removes that buildup. Charging — exposing a crystal to light, sound, or the earth — is simply resetting it to a neutral, energetically open state. Whether you approach this practically or spiritually, the care itself is real.
Quick Fact
Clear Quartz (Clear Quartz Tower) is one of the most forgiving crystals to cleanse — it tolerates water, mild soap, sunlight, and moonlight equally well.

Safety First: The Water & Sun Rules
Two elements destroy more crystals than any other: water and prolonged sunlight. Before using any cleansing or charging method, check these two lists.
Never Put These in Water
Fade in Direct Sunlight
- Amethyst — fades to gray
- Rose Quartz — fades to white
- Citrine (natural) — fades
- Aquamarine — loses color
- Fluorite — fades to clear
- Kunzite — rapid color loss
- Hiddenite — fades quickly
- Opal — dries, may crack
- Turquoise — may fade
- Sapphire — some colors fade
7 Cleansing Methods — Ranked by Safety
These methods are ordered from safest for all crystals to requires caution. If you are ever unsure, use Method 1 or Method 2 — they work for everything.
Method 1: Sound Cleansing (Safest for All)
A singing bowl, tuning fork, or even clapping your hands near a crystal creates vibration that moves through the stone without any physical contact. This is the single safest method — no water, no light, no heat. Place your crystal near a singing bowl and strike it several times, letting the sound waves wash over the stone for 30–60 seconds.
Best For
Water-soluble crystals (Selenite, Halite), iron-bearing stones (Pyrite, Hematite), and delicate mineral clusters where water could get trapped.
Method 2: Smoke Cleansing
Pass your crystal through the smoke from sage, palo santo, cedar, or incense for 20–30 seconds. This is safe for nearly all crystals except those with extreme heat sensitivity (opals can dry out near sustained flame). Keep the crystal moving — don't hold it in direct flame.

Moonlight is the safest light source for all crystals. Leave stones on a windowsill or outside on a full moon night — even an overcast sky works, as moonlight diffuses through clouds. Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and all light-sensitive crystals can safely use this method.
Method 4: Earth / Soil Burial
Bury your crystal in dry soil or a pot of clean earth for 24 hours. This works for most stones — but avoid this method for very soft or porous minerals that might absorb moisture from the soil. Wrap fragile pieces in a cloth before burying.
Method 5: Dry Salt (Not Salt Water)
Fill a bowl with dry sea salt or Himalayan salt and nestle your crystal in it — do not submerge in salt water, as many stones react poorly to prolonged saline exposure. Leave for a few hours. Dispose of the salt after use; do not reuse it for cooking.
Caution
Do not use salt on soft stones (Selenite, Calcite, Celestite) — salt can scratch or pit the surface over time.
Method 6: Running Water
Hold hard crystals (Mohs hardness 6+) under cool running water for 30–60 seconds. Visualize the water clearing anything the stone has absorbed. Pat dry immediately — do not soak. This method is safe for: Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Obsidian, Tiger's Eye, Jasper, and most Agates.
Do Not Use Water On
Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Hematite, Halite, Desert Rose, Chrysocolla, Celestite, Calcite, or Fluorite. See full list above.
Method 7: Selenite Plate or Charging Bowl
Place your crystal on or near a piece of Selenite for several hours. Selenite is self-cleansing and does not need to be cleansed itself — it continually moves energy. This is one of the most popular passive cleansing methods because you can leave multiple stones on a Selenite plate overnight. Shop our Selenite Wands and plates.
6 Charging Methods — Ranked by Safety
1. Full Moon Window (Recommended First)
Place crystals on a clean cloth on a windowsill facing the moon. Overnight is ideal. No risk of fading, heat, or water damage. Works for every crystal. The full moon is traditional but any moon phase will charge your stones.
2. Selenite Charging Plate
As mentioned above — Selenite both cleanses and charges stones placed upon it. A simple, always-available, zero-risk option.
3. Sunlight (Use Caution)
30 minutes of morning sunlight is safe for most opaque, dark-colored stones: Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, Shungite, Tiger's Eye, Jasper. Avoid for Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Aquamarine, Citrine, Fluorite, Kunzite, or any light-colored / translucent crystal.
4. Earth Burial (Overnight)
Bury your crystal in a garden patch or a pot of soil overnight. The earth draws out heavy energy and restores the stone's natural field. This is particularly effective for grounding stones like Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, and Smoky Quartz.
5. Crystal Clusters
Place smaller tumbled stones on a large Amethyst (Amethyst Geode) or Clear Quartz cluster. The cluster's larger field absorbs and resets the smaller stones overnight. A beautiful, passive method that requires no action on your part.
6. Intention Setting
Hold your crystal in both hands, close your eyes, and breathe slowly. State your intention for the stone — what you want it to support, amplify, or attract. This takes 1–2 minutes. While it requires no external element, it is most effective when combined with one of the physical methods above.

How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?
There is no universal answer, but here are practical benchmarks:
- After purchase: Always cleanse a new crystal before first use.
- Daily-wear jewelry: Cleanse weekly. Stones worn on the body absorb more than display pieces. See our crystal bracelet collection for stones suited to everyday wear.
- Meditation / healing stones: Cleanse after each session.
- Display stones: Monthly is sufficient unless the piece is in a high-traffic, high-energy space.
- After emotional events: If a stone was near you during an intense experience (illness, conflict, grief), cleanse it promptly.

Cleansing is only half the equation. How you store crystals determines how long that cleansed state holds.
- Separate hard and soft stones. A Mohs 9 sapphire will scratch a Mohs 3 calcite if they touch. Use individual pouches.
- Avoid direct sunlight in storage. Even stones that tolerate sunlight for charging will fade if stored in a sunny window long-term.
- Humidity matters. High humidity accelerates oxidation in iron-bearing stones (Pyrite, Hematite). Store in a dry location.
- Selenite nearby. Keeping a Selenite plate in your storage area provides passive, ongoing maintenance between intentional cleanses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use tap water to cleanse crystals?
Yes, for water-safe crystals. Cool tap water works fine for brief rinses — you do not need spring or distilled water. Avoid hot water, which can cause thermal shock in some stones.
How long should I leave crystals in moonlight?
A full night (sunset to sunrise) is traditional, but 2–4 hours gives effective results. Moonlight works through glass, so a windowsill is fine if you prefer not to leave stones outside.
Is it okay to cleanse multiple crystals together?
Yes — sound cleansing (singing bowl) and moonlight are both effective for multiple stones at once. Keep hard and soft stones from touching each other during storage and cleansing to prevent scratching.
Does charging my crystal make it feel different?
Many people report that freshly charged crystals feel lighter, cooler, or more vibrant to the touch. Physically, a clean crystal with no oil buildup simply looks better — the optical clarity improves, and colored stones appear more vivid.
What's the best crystal for beginners to start with?
Clear Quartz is ideal for beginners — it tolerates every cleansing and charging method and is widely considered an all-purpose stone. Amethyst (Amethyst Geode) and Rose Quartz are close seconds. All three are durable, widely available, and forgiving of beginner mistakes in care.
Can Selenite cleanse other crystals without touching them?
Yes. Selenite's cleansing effect extends a short distance from the stone — crystals placed near (but not touching) a Selenite plate or wand will still benefit. Direct contact is more efficient, but proximity works.
